Koaie River (Stream) Description Details
Andy Idema (aidema) described
the Koaie River (Stream), Hawaii
The Koaie Stream is located in the Alakai swamp in the kokee area of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. It is very difficult to access but if you want to catch rainbow trout in Hawaii, the Koaie River is your shot. The hike will take about 4 to 6 hours depending on your physical condition and there is some very difficult terrain. If you choose to fly fish the Koaie River though, it will all seem worth it. It's beautiful.
It is highly recommended that this hike is done with a guide or with someone that has hiked/fished it in the past. The trail is difficult and at times confusing. Take a GPS unit and bring plenty of water. The trail is almost 5 miles of challenging hiking and it does rain a lot.
Once at the stream the fly angler will encounter some difficult wading conditions. Good wading shoes are a must. The stream winds and bends and presents very nice pools. The water is not crystal clear and tropical as you might think, it is a darker brown stained color. This is because the source of the river is the wetest place on earth. As the rain runs through the Alaiaki swamp it picks up this darker color.
The trout are healthy and big. And you are catching rainbows on flies in Hawaii... pretty cool.
If you choose to fish you will most likely want to camp. A permit can be obtained via the Forest reserve (1-808-274-3433). (08/29/10)
