Firehole River reports

Tom Biery (Yellowfeet) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: I'm going out west to madison river the week after 4th of july. I am a newbie. any tips or other hotsots that I should consider. Thanks (06/20/09)
Doc Knoll (Knoll) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing: Hello from Wyoming and Montana.
Today, May 14th, I took a ride with the better half to see the western waters of the Park and to have a lunch at Old Faithful Lodge.
Since fishing is closed in the Park until the Memorial Day weekend I had the opportunity to watch some of the typical high water antics of the Gibbon, and Firehole rivers.
Good news the water as peaked and will slowly descend but wherever I stopped and took the time to watch the water for bug life I saw potential action as rising trout gave themselves away to my stare... " I could catch you Mr. Fish," I would say to myself. But, like yourself, we will have to wait for the opener. Oh, and I'll have a bunch of small stuff with me and maybe a good looking stonefly/salmonfly pattern or two.
Doc Knoll

You'll have to wait for a real update after the Memorial Day weekend.

Doc Knoll (Knoll) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Just a heads up on the upcoming season in Yellowstone Park. The Park's fishing season OPENS on the MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. Since we now have a 100% snowpack in most drainages the opener will be fished only on the western side of the Park. These waters will include the Firehole, Gibbon, Madison and possibly the Gardiner rivers. Other areas of the Park will typically still be draining the snowpack on this date.
Normally the insect population's size is small (18-22's) except for the salmonfly hatch which will be commonly 12's.
For those anglers who are frequent visitors here at the shop will fish small nymphs such as pheasant tails and woven nymph patterns until we see surface activity. Then, we will match the hatch with woven patterns. These patterns seem to be just a bit buggier then the common dubbed body immitations. (03/20/09)

Firehole River descriptions

Andy Idema (aidema) wrote - The Firehole rises in tiny Madison Lake which is a cold brook trout stream (some small browns) in the upper reaches. As it picks up feeder streams and continues its course the fly angler can focus on catching larger browns and rainbows. The Firehole is an excellent and sometimes challenging trout fishery. It is mineral rich meaning the insects (and trout) thrive. (08/20/08)
