Gallatin River reports

Brian McGeehan (bmcgeehan) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing: Winter fishing has been good on the Gallatin river and local spring creeks. Fishing has been primarily with nymphs with smaller patterns producing better than larger. Our snowpack stands at 120% so it looks like we may be in for another great water year in 2011!!! For more info on current water levels and snowpack updates visit (12/26/10)
Budlillys Shop (budlillys) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing: The Gallatin finally cleared below the Taylor Creek after a week of heavy afternoon rain showers. PMDs, Sallies, Caddis, Spruce Moths. Couple of Grizz have been frequenting the area between Speciman Creek and Black Butte - bring your bear spray and stay alert.
Yuba Caddis emerger, Twisted Baby Yellow 14-16, Henryville Special 12-18, Goddard Caddis 12-16, Twisted Sister brown 14.

Brian McGeehan (bmcgeehan) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Gallatin River Fishing Report Very Good
The Gallatin is fishing well. Flows are dropping and wading is now relatively easy (although always a challenge in the canyon with
the size of the rocks). Nymphing is productive with a girdle bug/beadhead combo tough to beat. Attractor dry fishing is picking up
and evening fish can produce great dry fly action. Hoppers are now a factor in the valley and spruce moths are showing up in the
canyon. Locals and tourists are out in force this time of year in the Canyon, but there is stil a lot of water to fish and we love to
head this way after a day of guiding to catch the evening rise. The lower portion of the river in the Valley is fishing well and allows
the adventurous soul to walk a while from bridge access points to gain solitude.

Budlillys Shop (budlillys) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: The Gallatin above Taylor Creek is in perfect condition - Taylor blew out yesterday from our Saturday storm, but should clear in another day or so. PMDs, Sallies, Caddis, Spruce Moths. Couple of Grizz have been frequenting the area between Speciman Creek and Black Butte - bring your bear spray and stay alert.

Yuba Caddis emerger, Twisted Baby Yellow 14-16, Henryville Special 12-18, Goddard Caddis 12-16, Twisted Sister brown 14.

Brian McGeehan (bmcgeehan) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: We've had some pretty warm weather by Montana standards the last few weeks. The Gallatin is ice free from Big Sky downstream far into the canyon. Winter fishing has been good from 12:30-4pm nypmhing the deeper holes (01/28/10)
steven gamble (srgamble) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Decent winter fishing on winter afternoons. Spring is coming! (01/30/09)

Gallatin River descriptions

Andy Idema (aidema) wrote - The Gallatin River is located in Southwestern Montana which flows for over 100 miles from Yellowstone to the Missouri River. Rainbows, cutthroats, and browns make up the population of trout and can be caught year round by the fly angler. Fly fishing the Gallatin hatches gives anglers a shot at nice fish that take olives, PMDs, caddis, and stoneflies. The salmon fly hatch occurs between mid June and early July. (08/07/08)
