Yampa River reports

Ryan Herbert (herb) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing: I fished the Yampa today 3-5-11 from 1-4pm midges and Bwo hatching. Water clarity is about 3-4ft and temp is still cold 42-46 degree. I was using suan worms, barr's, eggs and cdc Rs2. on 4x-5x flro.hooked in to ten and landed five. All 17 or bigger biggest landed was 23 cuttbow. Get ready because this spring is going to be awsome!! (03/05/11)
Adam Reder (adamreder) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing: Dry fly action all day! Although the fish were also biting many nymphs, they were biting dries throughout the day, so thats what I chose to use. (07/20/09)
Adam Reder (adamreder) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing: Nymph fishing the early morning is the way to go. Try fishing a double nymph rig with a large attractor pattern in front and small mayfly and midge patterns behind. The hot fly today was a size 20 black RS2. We also had success on Caddis dry flies in the morning!! The afternoons are starting to really heat up with caddis hatches, and the lunkers under the bridge are taking caddis dries aggressively. (07/17/09)
Adam Reder (adamreder) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing: The fishing has picked up a little bit. I noticed a few fish rising to some caddis and mayflies, and had some luck using a elk hair caddis dry fly. The only success I had with dry flies was sight fishing for the very few rising fish in the river. Nymphing was also a bit slow, but caught some on a San Juan worm and caddis nymph rig. (06/29/09)
Adam Reder (adamreder) reported - 4 - Poor fly fishing: The river is still flowing high for the middle of June. The gates to get to the SWA are still closed as of today, so be prepared for the hike. The fishing was slow and the trout were only eager to bite a few streamers. I recommend fishing the early morning because of the daily afternoon thunderstorms. (06/15/09)
Patrick Dodge (flyfisher23) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing: Fishing was excellent in the afternoon slow in the morning due to ice jams. Water clarity was the best i have seen in the last couple of years (01/18/09)

Yampa River descriptions

Andy Idema (aidema) wrote - The Yampa River originates high above the northwest Colorado town of Yampa. There are diverse fly fishing opportunities along the 150 miles of river as it flows west into the Green River. The stretch from Stillwater Reservoir to Yampa has tailwaters, meadow sections, and tumbling freestone waters that offer the fly angler a good chance at a grand slam. (06/13/08)

Steve Zamora (Stevez)
The Yampa has been pretty good at the Tail Water, but too crowded. Through town runoff has gotten serious. This will continue at least till June. Meanwhile the tributaries will be the best bet or "Ice off" at some of the lakes. SFZ (1/19/13)

Flows are finally coming down and the fishing has greatly improved. It is now July 11th and conditions will continue to improve. Yellow Sallies in the A.M. have been productive. Go deeper as the day wears on. (1/19/13)
