Southwest reports

Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Capt. Rick Grassett’s Sarasota and Gasparilla Sound, FL Fishing Report for 4/30/2017 Anglers fishing with me, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, bluefish, flounder and snook in Sarasota Bay and trout, flounder and snook in Gasparilla Sound on flies, CAL jigs with shad tails and 2.75” DOA Shrimp during the past couple of weeks. Mark Wayde, from MI, fished a day in Sarasota Bay with me. We worked deep grass flats on both sides of the bay and he had good action catching and releasing trout to 18” and bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies fished on an intermediate sink tip fly line. Marshall Dinerman and a guest, both from Atlanta, also had some action with me in Sarasota Bay with trout and bluefish on CAL jigs with shad tails. Lew Murray, from Tarpon Springs, FL, fished a pre-dawn snook/flats trip with me in Sarasota Bay on Thursday. He started off strong with several snook to 26” caught and released on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly before daylight. We moved to the flats after daylight and he caught and released a few more on an EP Minnow fly pattern. Great job! My friends Mark Nichols, owner of DOA Fishing Lures and his wife, Jenny Nichols, fished with me on Friday and Saturday. We fished the back country of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande on Friday. We had some action catching and releasing a few snook, including a 30” fish that Jenny caught and released on a weedless-rigged CAL Shad tail. A nice snook! My wife, Karen Grassett, joined us on Saturday to fish the Sarasota CCA Photo All Release Challenge fishing tournament. It is a catch-photo-release format tournament for snook, reds and trout that raises money for conservation. Anglers must fish with identical boxes of donated lures or flies and all fish are immediately photographed and released to fight another day. We caught and released snook, trout, flounder and jacks on the 2.75” DOA Shrimp that was donated to the box by DOA Fishing Lures. Mark caught and released an over slot trout and Karen won the Ladies Trout division with a 19 ½” trout! Tarpon fishing should take off as the water in the coastal gulf continues to warm. Trout, blues and Spanish mackerel should also be good options on deep grass flats and passes of Sarasota Bay. Snook season closes from May 1 through Aug 31 on the west coast of Florida, so please handle them gently and release them quickly. You should find larger trout in shallow water along with snook and reds when conditions are good. Fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW for snook with flies and DOA Lures continues to be a good option. Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett IFFF Certified Fly Casting Instructor Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide at CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis Outfitter of the Year-2011 Snook Fin-Addict Guide Service, Inc. , and (941) 923-7799 (05/02/17)
Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Capt. Rick Grassett’s Sarasota & Gasparilla Sound, FL Fishing Report for 2/27 through 3/11/2017 Anglers fishing with me, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released snook, blues and jacks in the ICW at night, trout and bluefish in Sarasota Bay, snook and trout in the Terra Ceia Bay area and snook, redfish and trout in Gasparilla Sound on CAL jigs with shad tails, DOA Shrimp and flies during the past week. The best action was with snook and bluefish at night on flies. Jerry Poslusny, from Rochester, NY, and Rich Hunter from Longboat Key, FL, snook fished with me on Sunday evening, 2/27. We fished dock lights in the ICW near Venice and they had good action catching and releasing snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly. Martin Marlowe, from NY, and Tim Hearon from Siesta Key, FL, fished the same area with me on Monday evening, 2/28. They also had good action catching and releasing snook and some hefty bluefish on the same fly. Tom Lamb, from Geneva, Switzerland, and Diane Muhlfeld and Roy Glah, from Sarasota, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday, 3/1. We worked deep grass flats on both sides of the bay and they had steady action with trout, including several in the slot, on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Shrimp. One of the most productive techniques was drifting a DOA Shrimp behind the boat. Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL fished the Terra Ceia Bay area with me on Thursday, 3/2. With a front approaching, we found snook plentiful on shallow flats and he had good action catching and releasing them on CAL jigs with shad tails. The following day I had a great fly angler on board, but behind the front with a 15 to 20-mph north wind and a bluebird sky the fish shut down. Martin Marlowe, from NY, snook fished with me on Monday evening, 3/6. We fished dock lights in the ICW near Venice and he had good action catching and releasing snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly. Alan Sugar and Ray Hutchinson, both from MI, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday, 3/8. We worked deep grass flats on both sides of the bay and they had steady action with trout and a bluefish on Clouser flies fished on sink tip and intermediate fly lines. Alan caught and released a 23” trout, his personal best! These big trout are usually females, so I feel it is important to the health of our trout fishery that they be released. I gave a presentation, “Spring on the Fly in Southwest Florida” to an enthusiastic group at the Charlotte Harbor Fly Fishers in Punta Gorda on Wednesday evening, 3/8. It was good to see some old friends and new faces, too. Dave Reinhart, from VA, and Will Patterson, from Tampa, FL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Thursday, 3/9. They fished hard and it paid off for them late in the day with numerous snook and some very nice trout, including several over the slot, caught and released on CAL jigs with shad tails. Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL fished the same area with me on Friday, 3/10 and caught and released a slam including several snook, trout and a red on CAL jigs with shad tails. Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and more should be a good option on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. You should also find larger trout in shallow water along with snook and reds when conditions are good. Action in the coastal gulf should take off with king and Spanish mackerel, cobia and tripletail. Fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW for snook with flies and DOA Lures continues to be a good option. Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett IFFF Certified Fly Casting Instructor Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide at CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis Outfitter of the Year-2011 Snook Fin-Addict Guide Service, Inc. , and (941) 923-7799 (03/11/17)
Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Capt. Rick Grassett’s Sarasota & Gasparilla Sound, FL Fishing Report for 2/12 through 2/26/2017 Anglers fishing with me, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released snook, jacks and blues at night in the ICW near Venice on flies, trout in Sarasota Bay and trout, reds and snook in Gasparilla Sound on CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms and during the past couple of weeks. The best action was in shallow water, where long casts with spinning tackle paid off and catch and release snook fishing in the ICW at night. Jerry Poslusny, from Rochester, NY, and Rich Hunter, from Longboat Key, FL, fished dock lights in the ICW near Venice with me on Sunday night, 2/12. They had steady action catching and releasing snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly and Rich caught his first snook on a fly! Mark and Sarah Phelps, from Charleston, SC, fished the same area with me on Monday evening, 2/13. Mark is a great fishing guide in the Charleston area and also guided in our area when they lived in Bradenton several years ago. Action was slower than the night before to start, but turned on later in the trip. In addition to snook, they also caught and released several jacks and a nice bluefish. Sarah had some action with a CAL jig with a shad tail on spinning tackle and Mark finished the night with a nice snook caught and released on a glass minnow fly pattern with a 6-wt. Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL and Jack McCulloch, from Lakewood Ranch, FL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla sound near Boca Grande with me on Friday, 2/17. Although fish in shallow water were very spooky, they caught trout to 19” and a couple of reds on CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms. I was one of the instructors, along with IFFF Master Certified Fly Casting Instructors Capt. Pete Greenan and Capt. Rex Gudgel, for the Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers annual free fly casting clinic on Saturday morning, 2/18 at The Meadows. The event was well attended and introduced some new anglers, including several youngsters, to fly fishing. Ashley Jade Little and Walt Plasson of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, Capt. Josh Greer of West Wall Outfitters and The Compound, were on hand with numerous brands of fly tackle available for participants to try out. Kayak fly fishing guide, Steve Gibson of Southern Drawl Kayak Fishing, was also there to demonstrate fly fishing out of a NuCanoe Pursuit kayak. A great event! Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL and Jim Pociask, from Sarasota, FL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla sound near Boca Grande with me on Monday, 2/20. They caught and released trout to 21” and snook to 26” on CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms. Siesta Key and Longboat Key winter residents, Joe Brinkmeyer and Jim Brady, and Ray Brinkmeyer, from Indianapolis, IN, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Thursday, 2/23. We worked deep grass flats on the west side of the bay and they had steady action with trout to 18” on CAL jigs with shad tails. Capt. Ed Hurst and I were the instructors for a CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing School on Saturday, 2/25. Students received instruction in fly casting basics, line control, shooting line and the roll cast. We also covered leader construction, fly selection and saltwater fly fishing techniques. Contact CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at (941) 349-4400 or info@cbsoutfitters.com to make reservations for the next school on Mar 25th. You should find snook, larger trout and reds in shallow water when conditions are good. Wading with a fly rod or making long casts with spinning tackle are good tactics for fishing shallow water. Catch and release night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with flies and DOA Lures continues to be a good option. Trout should also be a good option on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Capt. Rick Grassett’s Sarasota & Gasparilla Sound, FL Fishing Report for 1/30 through 2/11/2017 Anglers fishing with me, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released snook at night in the ICW near Venice, trout, blues and flounder in Sarasota Bay and trout, snook, reds, pompano and a permit in Gasparilla Sound on flies and CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms during the past week. The best action was catch and release snook fishing in the ICW at night. Martin Marlowe, from NY, fished dock lights in the ICW near Venice with me on Tuesday night, 1/31. It was his personal best snook fishing trip ever as far as the amount of action! He had nonstop action catching and releasing snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly. He also fished with me on Thursday night, 2/9 and had steady action catching and releasing snook on the same fly. Another great trip! Nick Reding, from Longboat Key, FL and Tony Merlis, from NH, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Thursday, 2/2. We waded a shallow flat and fished from the boat where they caught and released several over slot trout to 24” and a flounder on my Grassett Flats Bunny fly. Mike Perez, from Sarasota, FL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Friday, 2/3. We caught and released a few trout, snook and a red on CAL jigs with shad tails and 4” jerk worms. We waded a bar and Mike caught and released a juvenile permit, his first ever on a fly, on my Grassett Flats Minnow fly! Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL and Stephen Liska, from Naples, FL fished the same area with me on Saturday, 2/4. They had a great day catching and releasing a couple of “slams” including trout to 18”, several reds to 24”, several pompano, flounder and snook on CAL jigs with shad tails and 4” jerk worms. Stephen caught and released his first big red in shallow water! Gary Marple, from Sarasota, FL, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Tuesday, 2/7. He had some action catching and releasing trout on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly while fishing deep grass flats on the west side of the bay. Marshall Dinerman, from Atlanta, GA, and Edwin Rothberg, from NC, fished the same areas with me on Wednesday, 2/8. They had good action with trout and several blues on CAL jigs with shad tails. Fish in shallow water have been very spooky due to clear water and calm conditions, making them tough to catch, although you should find snook, larger trout and reds there when conditions are good. Wading with a fly rod or making long casts with spinning tackle are good tactics for fishing shallow water. Catch and release night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with flies and DOA Lures should also be a good option. Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and more should be good options on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Capt. Rick Grassett’s Sarasota & Gasparilla Sound, FL Fishing Report for 1/16 through 1/28/2017 Anglers fishing with me, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel and bluefish on CAL jigs with shad tails in Sarasota Bay and trout, snook and reds in Gasparilla Sound on CAL jigs with shad tails, 4” jerk worms and flies during the past couple of weeks. Dick Striano, from MA, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Monday, 1/16. We worked deep grass flats on the west side of the bay where he had some action with trout on Ultra Hair Clouser flies. Carl Thomas, from KY, and Dave Saturley, from Sarasota, fished the same areas with me on Wednesday, 1/18 and had some action catching and releasing trout, Spanish mackerel and bluefish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with had tails. Bill Morrison, from Anna Maria Island and Gary Marple, from Sarasota, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Thursday, 1/19. We worked deep grass flats on the west side of the bay where they had some action with trout and blues on Ultra Hair Clouser flies. Dave Wahl, from Lakewood Ranch, and Dennis Dombrowski, from Reno, NV, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Saturday, 1/21. Despite a strong approaching front, fishing was challenging. However they caught and released a few trout on Ultra Hair Clouser flies, including Dennis’s first saltwater fish on a fly! Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Tuesday, 1/24. He had a great day catching and releasing a “slam” including trout to 19”, a couple of reds to 24” and a 26” snook on CAL jigs with shad tails and 4” jerk worms. We found a concentration of reds and snook, but couldn’t get them to eat at first. With the tide a little higher, we backed off a little, changed the style of CAL plastic tail and worked the area a second time. That proved to be a winning combination as Keith caught and released a couple of nice reds and a snook! Longtime friends and clients Tom Lamb, from Geneva, Switzerland and his daughter, Diane Muhlfeld, from Sarasota, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Thursday, 1/26. They had some action with trout and a couple of pompano to 4-lbs on CAL jigs with shad tails. Lew Murray, from Tarpon Springs, FL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Friday, 1/27. We worked on shallow water fly fishing techniques and he caught and released his first snook on my Grassett Flats Minnow fly. Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, pompano and more should be good options on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Catch and release night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with flies and DOA Lures should also be good. Also look for snook in shallow water along with larger trout and reds when conditions are good. Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett IFFF Certified Fly Casting Instructor Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide at CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis Outfitter of the Year-2011 Snook Fin-Addict Guide Service, Inc. , and (941) 923-7799 (01/28/17)
Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing: Capt. Rick Grassett’s Sarasota & Gasparilla Sound, FL Fishing Report for 1/2 through 1/15/2017 Anglers fishing with me, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action catching and releasing snook, trout, bluefish and Spanish mackerel in Sarasota Bay, snook and blues in the ICW south of Sarasota and snook, trout and redfish in Gasparilla Sound on flies and DOA Lures during the past week. The best action was catching and releasing snook in the ICW and in skinny water. Mike Ward, from Asheville, NC and David Ufer, from Ann Arbor, MI, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Monday, 1/2. We worked deep grass flats on the west side of the bay where they had good action with trout, blues and a Spanish mackerel on CAL jigs with shad tails. Marshall Dinerman, from Atlanta, GA, fished the same areas with me on Friday, 1/6. Sea fog was heavy when we started, but it dissipated quickly allowing us to move around. He had good action with trout on CAL jigs with shad tails, DOA Deadly Combos and flies. Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL and his son-in-law Rick Anderson, also from IL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Tuesday, 1/3. They had good action with numerous trout to 20”, several snook to 24” and a nice red on CAL jigs with shad tails. The trout action was very good with the majority of the fish falling in the upper slot. Rick scored a slam, with numerous trout, a few snook and a red at the end of the day to complete his slam! Nick Reding, from Longboat Key, FL, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Thursday, 1/4. We waded a couple of sand bars and caught a few quality fish. Nick caught and released a 26” snook and a couple of nice trout on my Grassett Flats Minnow fly. Larger trout are typically found in shallower water this time of year and with water temperatures still around 70 degrees, there are also still plenty of snook on shallow flats. Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL and Victor Feldman, from Champagne, IL, fished the backcountry of Gasparilla Sound near Boca Grande with me on Tuesday, 1/10. They had a great day with numerous trout to 20”, more than a dozen snook to 29” and a red on CAL jigs with shad tails. Victor scored a slam, with numerous trout, a few snook and a red to complete his slam! Martin Marlowe, from NY and Tim Hearon, from Siesta Key, FL, had a great trip with me in the ICW south of Sarasota on Wednesday evening, 1/11. With a strong incoming tide, snook gorged themselves on glass minnows and my Grassett Snook Minnow fly, which imitates a glass minnow. They had nonstop action catching and releasing snook to 29”, blues to 4-lbs and jacks. Dean Fields, from IN, fished the same area with me on Thursday night, 1/12, also had great trip catching and releasing numerous snook and blues on the same fly. Tony Merlis, from NH, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Friday, 1/13. We worked deep grass flats on the west side of the bay where he had some action catching and releasing trout to 18” on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly. I was the instructor for a CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing School on Saturday, 1/14. Students received instruction in fly casting basics, line control, shooting line and the roll cast. We also covered leader construction, fly selection and saltwater fly fishing techniques. Contact CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at (941) 349-4400 or info@cbsoutfitters.com to make reservations for the next school on Feb 25th. Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more should continue to be a good option on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Catch and release night snook fishing around lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with flies and DOA Lures should also be good. Also look for snook in shallow water along with larger trout and reds when conditions are good. There may be some action in the coastal gulf with false albacore (little tunny) and tripletail depending on sea conditions. Tight Lines, Capt. Rick Grassett IFFF Certified Fly Casting Instructor Orvis-Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide at CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis Outfitter of the Year-2011 Snook Fin-Addict Guide Service, Inc. , and (941) 923-7799 (01/15/17)

Bill Baldus (bbaldus) wrote - Sight fishing for Tarpon, Snook and Redfish in the 10,000 Island/Eveglades of Southwest Florida. We provide all tackle, flies, leaders, lunches and refreshments and can accomodate all skill levels. We provide on the water instruction on casting, knots & leaders, flies, baitfish/prey and the fish we target. (07/06/10)
Andy Idema (aidema) wrote - Southwest Florida has some of the best backwater fishing in the state. The fly angling in the extensive network of bays, mangrove islands, and tidal creeks can be challenging and rewarding. There are many oyster bars and acres of seagrass beds that attract an abundance of salt water fish. Snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, and tarpon can all be taken on the fly. (06/14/08)

Rick Grassett (Capt. Rick Grassett)
Fishing has been hot! Anglers fishing with me on the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released snook, reds, trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel and blues the last couple of weeks. The best action continues to be on deep grass flats for trout, Spanish mackerel and pompano. We also caught Spanish mackerel, blues and pompano in Big Pass and Spanish mackerel on the Silvertooth Reef in the coastal gulf off Lido Key. Reds are becoming more active in skinny water and snook are staging on shallow flats.

Bernie Feinberg and David Schofield, both from Sarasota, FL, and David’s son, Mike from NY, fished a night snook trip with me near Venice on Tuesday evening, March 3rd. It was a cool, windy night with the temperature in the high 40’s by the time we got off the water. However, it didn’t affect the snook bite that much. They caught and released about a dozen snook to 24” and a bonus 4-pound trout. All fish were caught on my Grassett’s Snook Minnow fly. Michelle Ford, from Nokomis, FL, her dad, Ray Ford from Brogue, PA and a friend, Cathy, fished Sarasota Bay with me the next day. They caught trout and blues on deep grass flats at Stephens Point and near Long Bar and Buttonwood Harbor on CAL jigs with shad tails. Fly angler Seth Jaeger and his girlfriend fished the same areas with me on Friday and caught trout and blues on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with shad tails.

I was a seminar speaker at the Sarasota Florida Sportsman Show the weekend of March 7th and 8th. I did a Power Point presentation, incorporating Google Earth satellite photos, on “How to Find Fish in Sarasota Bay”. The focus of the presentation was on why fish are in certain areas and how to fish those areas, so that anglers can find their own hot spots. The weather got even better the next week and the Spanish mackerel came on strong! Marty and Christine Enger, from Sarasota, FL, fished with me on Monday. They had steady action with trout, blues, and Spanish mackerel in Big Pass and on deep grass flats from the Middleground flat to Buttonwood Harbor.

Sarasota winter resident, Harry Beaty, and a guest fished Sarasota Bay with me on Tuesday morning. They had fast action with Spanish mackerel in Big Pass and trout at Stephens Point on CAL jigs with shad tails. Doug Boardman, and his young daughter, Ashley, fished Big Pass and the west side of the bay in the afternoon. They caught trout and pompano on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with shad tails.

Mike Sprague, from NJ, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Wednesday. The action was a little slower, but we finished the day strong with some very nice trout caught on CAL jigs with shad tails near Long Bar. Dick Hume, from MN, and his son-in-law, Chris Leu from TX, fished Big Pass, the coastal gulf, the Radio Tower and Middleground flats and near Buttonwood Harbor with me on Thursday. They had steady action with Spanish mackerel, trout and pompano on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with shad tails. My brother, Kirk Grassett from Middletown, DE, came in for a few days on Thursday. He fished on his own and with our friend, Rusty Chinnis from Longboat Key, for a couple of days in Sarasota Bay and had great action with trout to 25”, pompano and Spanish mackerel on flies. We all fished together on Friday after noon and had a good bite with trout and pompano near Buttonwood Harbor. Kirk finished the day with a nice red on a Crab Clouser fly (olive, tan and white with gold flash) near Long Bar.

I was the instructor for another CB’s Saltwater Outfitters Orvis-Endorsed fly casting school on Saturday. It’s a lot of fun for me when the students “get it” and start having success with their casting. There is one more school left for the season on Saturday, April 4th. Cost for the school, which runs from 9 AM to 3 PM, is $150 and includes an instructional video, a textbook, the use of premium Orvis fly tackle and lunch. Contact CB’s Saltwater Outfitters at (941) 349-4400 to sign up.

Next week’s tides are not the best (2 tide days with one high and one low) but fishing should still be good. Fishing is exploding as we head into spring. Look for more Spanish mackerel and little tunny to move into our area, fishing for reds and snook should get better as snook stage on shallow flats and reds get hungrier. Deep grass flats should be hot with trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel and more. Also, keep your eyes open for tarpon as the first fish of the season should begin to show up.
