Current River reports

Cliff Parmer (cparmer) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing: Some activity on Elk Hair Caddis when fish are near the surface and very small mayfly spinners were seen at Baptist Camp at mid-morning with corresponding high level of feeding. Takes are very tentative and so hook-ups are difficult. (10/22/15)
Gary Eaton (doubledoc) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing: High and stained. Large streamer brought Brown Trout over 22 inches to hand and turned others. Best fishing in low light casting to bank with jerk-strip retrieve. (04/24/09)

Current River descriptions

Gary Eaton (doubledoc) wrote - http://www.nps.gov/ozar/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_River_(Missouri) Ozark Limestone Spring Creek with headwaters in Montauk State Trout Park where fish are stocked daily March 1 to October 31. The Current River is an unobstructed flow and part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways managed by the United States Department of the Interior. Subject to flooding, especially in the sringtime. Kayaks and Canoes are the best way to float this river. Fishing allows all methods but it is a Blue Ribbon Trout Management water allowing only trout over 18 inches to be kept with a limit of one per day. Anglers outside Montauk State Trout Park should expect significant watercraft traffic on anytime school is not in session, increasing on weekends. Boats have the right-of-way. Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Smallmouth Bass are primary game fish in the upper part of the river and may be found throughout most of the upper half. 5-7 weight fly rods 8 to 9 feet long are most commonly used but many find this river well-suited to lighter line weights. Most successful spin fishing is with ultralight outfits throwing a spinner or jig. (06/08/08)

My girlfriend Amy and I fished the Current at Baptist Access and Parker's Ferry July 16 and 17, 2010. The water was low and fairly clear. Beware of weekend canoeing; although they didn't seem to prevent the fish from taking prince nymphs, helgrammites, and zebra midges. Amy also had success with a San Juan worm. She had a brown and rainbow that went over 16 inches, both on prince nymphs. I had one rainbow in the 15 inch range. Altogether, we landed between 15 and twenty browns and rainbows between these two locations on the Current. We drifted deep holes about 4 or 5 feet below our strike indicators. The weather was hot (90s) and it was humid. We fished mostly in the evening on the 16th, and from 8:30 to 2:00 on the 17th. (1/19/13)
