Matthew's reports

Matthew Patterson (mattyp) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing on the Clark Fork River, Montana
fihing was slow from about 9 to about 1. we picked up a few fish on streamers, stonefly nymphs, and mayfly nymphs. it was a nice sunny day and about noon there was alot of grey drakes coming off. we had about 3 hours of kick ass dryfly fishing. there were three boats and eight people in our party and we probably caught about 40 to 50 fish on drys all together in that time period. landed some 20 inch browns and 15 to 18 inch cutts. even caught a few acrobatic rainbows. typical spot and stalk fishing. push down river and throw streamers and nyphs untill you spot the rising fish, then anchor up and really work them. lost and snapped off some really big fish. had a huge brown chase a streamer all the way to the boat. overall it was a great spring day. (04/11/10)
Matthew Patterson (mattyp) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing on the Thompson River, Montana
fished the thompson two weekends ago. the weather was nice, a typical blue bird montana spring day. fish were still concentrated in the deep runs. saw a few rise after a really small caddis fly. couldnt connect with a dry though. lots of stoone flys and mayflies under the rocks right on shore. the thompson has a great skwallah and salmon fly hatch. fished a pats rubber legs really deep witha red pheasent tail trailing behind. we caught alot of whitefish and just a few trout. over all it was a good trip. saw alot of elk and sheep. montana in the spring is just beautiful. (03/23/10)
Matthew Patterson (mattyp) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing on the Missouri River, Montana
got to the river about 830 am and hit about an hour and a half of good fishing. then the wind stopped blowing and the sun came out. dead drifted midges eggs and sow bug patterns with the midges being the best with a little swing on the tail end. (11/28/09)
Matthew Patterson (mattyp) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing on the Flathead River, Montana
Cold weather today. 21 degrees at the launch. fished small stremers and nymphs for lake superior whitefish. ugly fish but they eat real good. stripping the streamers and dead drifting nymphs under an indicator. picked up mountain whitefish, rainbows, cut throat, and even a nice lake trout(see pic). best luck with a size 10 sculpzilla. Whitefish take is real subtle. any extra pressure on your line and set the hook. only one trout on the streamer and it was the biggest of the day. white fish were all about 4 pounds. turn on the heater, turn up the death punch on your ipod, practice your skagit casts, and get bent. (11/15/09)
Matthew Patterson (mattyp) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing on the Flathead River, Montana
Picking up nice cuts on streamers. Upstream cast, big mend, and swing. Get down deep. Smaller bugs working the best. Olive and black. Picking up the occasional bull trout and lake trout. Lake Superior whitefish are moving into the river to spawn. Not much to look at but they put up a hell of a fight. Going out on sunday to try and caatch a few. The whiteys smoke real good. (11/11/09)
Matthew Patterson (mattyp) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing on the Missouri River, Montana
here comes the cold weather there goes the crowds. Streamers will be good for a little while longer but the midge fishing will heat up all winter long. Size 20 and smaller mide patterns will produce fish from the soft edges of deep runs. Big rainbows and browns will actually move to take large san juan worms. Find the fish, sit on them, and get bent all day long. Ocassional warm weather and dollar drafts at Uncle Joes bar keep me and my friends going back for the excellant fishing. Give it a try. I'll buyyou a beer. (11/10/09)

Matthew Patterson (mattyp)
It's been pretty good. Had kind of strange fall that put things a little off, but it's getting better. I live like 3 hours away from it so I onlyh get to hit it about every other week. The last time we were there, the rainbows were just mauling the streamers. Do much winter midging down there? (4/30/11)

Joseph burgher (joseph burgher)
actually I have never fished the Clark fork I see it all the time when I go over to the ST Joe. I get off the 90 at ST.Regis and head over the mountain. I seen on your profile you where doing some winter fishing on the clark fork and thought there's something to do in the winter thats not to far from me. The winters are hard for me everything slows down and in the spring summer and fall I'm on the go. so other then going to Argentina witch I cant afford I was hoping on some winter fly fishing. I have never fished the Missouri or the Bighorn I hope to this new season I have guide school in Montana in july and hope to fish some of Montana's waters then. I will start exploring the clark fork as well next year. I am a coeur d'alene and ST Joe bum but I really want to start hooking into some monster browns. (4/30/11)

Tepee Creek is part of the Coeur d'alene drainage from the main road its about 1 1/2 hr of off road driving on old logging roads. Lots of elk and moose, I have a tricked out bronco i take up there. than its about 2mile hike then i fish upstream so when your done for the day the truck is Farly close. I have another spot that is about 3 miles of river walking no trails high cliffs and over growth so you have to walk the river. if you have an email address i can send you some pics i walk it first thing and fish my way back. its really a awesome places to fish I seen some of the bigest cuts I have ever seen this year there. I lost one that had to push over 25in just amazing place. I have had 20 fish days with the smallest being 16" and lots of 18-20 " fish also there are these rock formations that will blow your mined (4/30/11)

let me know how that switch rod work for ya what did you get as far as size and brand I might get one I think i need to see someone use one first. there has been times that i could have used one in the spring when the water is fast and high. (4/30/11)
Brian Minich (minich83)
Nice laker matt. The switch rods are fantastic. It is the only rod I will use now on the bigger rivers and for steelhead. (4/30/11)

well sounds great!! I actually don't work for cabelas anymore i had to go back to school and i have morals too good hard working people and customers that they didn't I don't know if all cabelas are that way or just that one but it was a reel disappointment for me as a manager working for them but had school anyways so had to say good by I have friends there so i still get a good deal. but sounds like that rods the ticket nice lake trout I bet that was fun. I have always wondered about tfo's they always seem to feel good just never fished with any. Thanks for the comment Matthew. My wife and I made about 7 trips up there this year. We have floated the west & main Bitterroot and waded the east Bitterroot along with several rivers along the way. Next year we plan on fishing the Clark Fork, Blackfoot and then working our way east of the divide. We love Montana and consider it our home. You live in Gods country, thanks for sharing it with us. It's getting late but I see you have some nice pics, i'd like to take a look at them tomorow. I'll leave ya some feedback. (4/30/11)
