Walt's reports

Walt Geryk (NeffGuide) reported - 2 - Good fly fishing on the Deerfield River, Massachusetts
Lower sections are at normal flows with good fishing. Upper sections are back to near normal releases and the fishing is also good again. Good fishing is happening now that the flows are stabilizing, especially around the normal fish drop off points of access. Best bets are morning and later day as mid day is hit or miss. Deep water buggering and nymphing remains good for this time of season and the wet fly season is heating up. Fish are spreading out nicely and the forecast for continued good fishing is in the works. Be sure to watch for scheduled fly and spey classes and schools in the area, or call and set up a personalized day of instruction and a wade or float fly fishing trip. (05/31/11)

Good fly and spey fishing is happening especially around the normal fish drop off points of access. Deep water buggering and nymphing is the best techniques for this time of season. Rainbows averaging 10-14 inches seem to be the norm for now. The releases of 825cfs makes high water wading and fishing in some areas a little better, but caution must be used. These will spread out and the conditions continue to change. All sections are producing healthy Massachusetts reared trout. time to get out and about as the fishing continues to get better. Be sure to watch for scheduled fly and spey classes and schools in the area, or call and set up a personalized day of instruction and a wade or float fly fishing trip. (05/18/11)
Walt Geryk (NeffGuide) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing on the Salmon River, New York
Good Higher Flows, but the mixed weather, rain and snow and the melt, with the added 32 degree runoff into the river will slow the older fish down, but the fresh fish and earlier post spawners will begin to feed more aggressively as soon as the water begins to warm. Look for sunny and slow water deeper pools and seams. Look for fly and spey fishing to be fair until the water temps rise. Will only get better in the coming days! To swing flies effectively, you must understand the spey fly, it's profile and the proper speed needed for optimal presentation. Important fly tracking techniques, as well as a properly tied fly to a leader, are major elements required to achieve maximum effectiveness and success. Learn these and more with Hardy Endorsed Guide & Instructor Walt Geryk. (03/26/11)

Salmon river is fair to good depending on syles of fishing. Fly and spey is directly related to experience, especially during this time of year. Proper presentations of larger flies and fly speed is crucial for success. The bottom bouncers and nymphers along with the use of floats and those who use split shots are faring better while using these techniques. Looking forward to possibly an early starting and longer lasting spring compared to last year. Also, there are plenty of fish in the lower river waiiting to make their spring spawing run. With the melt of this weekend, many are making there move. (02/20/11)
Walt Geryk (NeffGuide) reported - 4 - Poor fly fishing on the Deerfield River, Massachusetts
A warm up, but this is adding 32 degree runoff to the river which makes it even slower.Think Spring. Pick a nice warm day and fish the deeper runs and pools in the slower water edges and seams, be patient while nymphing small copper johns as the rainbows will just stop the fly softly. The browns are still feeding on larger patterns with a little color, these stops are a more pronounced tug. Success is experience related with lots of luck too. It's nice to be out, but better fly fishing is not far away! (02/20/11)
Walt Geryk (NeffGuide) reported - 3 - Fair fly fishing on the Salmon River, New York
Two special guests one from England and the other from Canada came in search of their first winter steelhead and they were not disappointed. Spey and fly fishing was good as they were able to land a hand full of nice steelies, a brown trout and an Atlantic. Most fish came on swinging larger spey flies with a couple coming on nymphs under my "Bob B Mendicator System". SLUSH and freezing temps has much of the river from the Trestle Pool down slushed up. Steelhead are spread throughout the river. Water temps pressing into the low 30s so it's time to slow down the swing of flies and the drift of nymphs. Continue to cover lots of water for success. Fishing in general has been pretty good with more brown trout action chasing large bright speys and streamers up high in the water column, and darker colors down deep. Plenty of fresh chrome around too. (01/29/11)
