Craig Phillips (FlatsLanderCP) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing on the Milford Lake, Kansas
The heat wave has warmed the water and the carp are starting to get active. My guiding partner, Captain Sodie, has hit Milford twice this week and caught fish both trips. The warm, shallow water along the banks is now warm enough that the food sources are active, and the carp are feeding. It is good now, and will get better through the summer.

Carp are starting to come off the spawn and move to the usual haunts. The water is crystal clear, and still a bit cool, so the fish are really spooky. They are also in slightly deeper water than in summer, but they will soon move up.

Right now, one of the most challenging ways for fly fishing for carp is under way - presenting dry flies to fish eating cottonwood seeds. Find a place where the seeds are falling on the water and look for fish sipping or grazing on them.

Try a size 10 or 12 dry fly, preferably white. If you tie, make some bivisible style flies tied with two white saddle hackles (save the Whiting grade one neck hackles for those little Colorado trout!). Use krystal flash for the tail and wing. White CDC flies will also work.

Use 6# (3x) tippet - no larger - and make your cast softly so the fly lands close to the feeding fish.

For cruisers (those not feeding, but visible near the surface) try a chartreuse or yellow woolly worm, size 6 or smaller.

Good luck, and visit our web site for contact information if you would like to try the world's most popular sport fish on a fly rod!

Craig Phillips (FlatsLanderCP) reported - 1 - Excellent fly fishing on the Milford Lake, Kansas
Shallow water sight fishing to carp continues to be good, with potential shots at dozens of fish in the 3-4 hours that is about the max one can stay out in the heat. Fish are running between 5 and 10 pounds on average, with larger fish once in a while. I fished last and this Fri/Sat, and caught 3-4 fish each 2-3 hour session. Even had a school of wipers come into a cove I was fishing and managed to pick up a 2 pounder as it chased shad. Early morning and late evening wiper topwater bites are still sporadic, but should be picking up soon. (08/02/08)
